An idiom is an expression, word, or phrase that cannot be translated literally into your own language.
If you translate it, it will not have the same meaning.
Native speakers naturally understand idioms.
English learners find idioms extremely hard to use and understand.

Let me give you an example…
Take a look at this very common idiom:
“It's not my cup of tea.”
If you translate this into your own language it literally means that a specific cup of tea does not belong to you.
However, in English:
it's not my cup of tea = it's not what I like

If I say:
I won't go to the disco because it's not my cup of tea.
I really mean:
I won't go to the disco because it's not what I like.

Would you know how to respond if someone told you that they wanted to get to the bottom of something? Why don't I sound natural when I talk?
